13 Mind boggling Facts of GTA:
There are some interesting and stunning facts regarding GTA game series I just want to discuss with you guys.So don't while away time and let's get straight to the blog.![]() |
| GTA 5 |
1. GTA Franchise sales 125 million copies:
GTA has been around for 15 years and it’s no surprise it’s pulled in massive amounts of money. Last year Take Two Interactive revealed that the franchise sold 125 million copies to date. They jumped 11 million units from the previous year and it doesn’t look like the franchise is slowing down anytime soon. This puts GTA ahead of other franchises like Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and FIFA. More family-friendly games like Mario, Pokemon and The Sims have topped the GTA franchise, but with GTA V soon to be released to the masses, it may surpass the latter as well.
2. The GTA Franchise Was A Complete Accident:
The fact that the GTA series even exists is merely a happy accident that occurred during the development of DMA Design's (who eventually became Rockstar North) game Race'n'Chase, which originally saw the player taking the role of either a cop or criminal and facing off against the opposing side. However, a glitch caused the police cars to be unnecessarily aggressive in chasing down the criminals, even trying to ram them off the road, and this turned out to be one of the game's most popular features with testers, so DMA kept it in and ultimately decided to remove the ability to play as a cop. Following on from that, the lame title was dropped and Grand Theft Auto was born. It's terrifying to think that without this glitch, gamers the world over might not have one of the most treasured video game franchises in history.
3. There Are Only Two Child Characters In The Whole Game Series:
One of the most conspicuous absences in the GTA series is the lack of children: you won't see any as you embark on a killing spree around Liberty City or Los Santos, even though they're a natural part of life in any real city. Though the beta version of GTA III did indeed include children, they were eventually removed considering the immense controversy which would have emerged had they been included, with right-wing media outlets no doubt denouncing it as a "child killing simulator". As such, kids have also been kept out of the GTA story for the most part, with two minor exceptions. The first character is Mary-Beth Williams, a baby in Vice City Stories who ends up with both her parents killed, and secondly, there's GTA IV's Jill Von Crastenburg, a 13-year-old, Paris Hilton-like heiress whose sexual escapades are no doubt a satire of how children in the media spotlight grow up far too fast. Aside from them, kids are kept at arm's length from the very adult shenanigans taking place in these games.
4. It's Possible To Complete The Entire Vice City In 57 Minutes:
Though the involved, sprawling nature of GTA might not suggest it, there's a large community of gamers committed to speed-running these games, intent on finishing them in the quickest time possible. While the world records for GTA IV and GTA V are 5 hours, 37 minutes and 7 hours, 25 minutes respectively, the 3D Universe games have been clocked at some mind-bogglingly fast paces. GTA III, for instance, has been beaten in just 71 minutes, but the most impressive record is held by player Fil_maj_rasz, who managed to beat Vice City in just 57 minutes and 29 seconds. Watching the run is like observing any master of their craft at the top of their game: the player exploits glitches to finish missions quicker, and appears to know pretty much every nook and cranny which could possibly get them through the game as fast as possible. It's stunning to watch, and certainly one of the most impressive speed runs of any major video game out there.
5. Rockstar Vs. Celebrities:
Though Rockstar have caught plenty of flak from right-wing commentators and enterprising lawyers, they've also had a few encounters with the rich and famous themselves. Firstly, 50 Cent insisted that he had been approached by Rockstar to voice CJ in San Andreas but turned it down on the basis that he would only want to play himself in a video game (which later happened with the terrible Bulletproof and slightly better Blood on the Sand), though Rockstar vehemently denied this. Much more controversial was Lindsay Lohan's frivolous lawsuit against Rockstar, claiming that the minor character Lacey Jonas (an anorexic actress constantly being hounded by the media) was modeled on her likeness, as was the above image of a woman used heavily in promotional materials for the game. One particularly outrageous claim in Lohan's suit is that she has been "using the peace sign hand gesture for years before and after its use in the video game", and it's clearly just a desperate attempt to keep herself in the public eye as her fame is bottoming out.
6. World Record Completion time for GTA III is 1 hour and 12 minutes:
Not many gamers attempt to speed run a game like GTA, however a YouTube user by the name of MSuraev posted a speed run of GTA III the beginning of this year and got through the game in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 10 seconds. Killing enemies without prompts, power-sliding and knowing every traffic pattern only proves he‘s at the height of his game. It’s alright; we won’t ask you your completion time because he clearly will put you to shame.
7. GTA IV has 80,000 lines of dialogue:
GTA always maintains their quality of strong voice acting throughout the series and it’s always been praised for that. It’s great they keep their standards up to par, but kudos to the script writer of GTA IV which contains a staggering 80,000 lines of dialogue. Let’s just compare for a second: Mass Effect 3 has 40,000 lines and Fallout: New Vegas has 65,000 – which was a world record for role-playing games at the time. But with all the passerby’s talking on cell phones you need to have a lot of dialogue in GTA. It’s unclear how much dialogue GTA V will have but with the map already being double the size, it’ll most definitely top this.
Rockstar recently stated that the map size of the upcoming GTA V is going to be greater than that of Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV, and GTA: San Andreas combined. New York’s Manhattan is only 23 square miles, while the GTA map sizes are respectively 28, 6.8 and 13.9 square miles. GTA IV had a pretty small map, so get ready for a massive one coming soon.

8. The map size of GTA ∨ is twice the size of real-life Manhattan.

9. The Last Two Pirates Of The Caribbean Films Are The Only Movies More Expensive Than GTA V :
And finally, GTA V currently ranks as the third most expensive video game ever produced (adjusted for inflation), sitting behind last year's Destiny ($500 million) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ($275 million). In 2015 money, GTA V cost a huge $268 million to date, which is a good $55 million above the fourth entry, Final Fantasy VII. Even Hollywood can't really keep up with that price tag, because the only two movies to date to cost more than GTA V are the third and fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movies, At World's End ($300 million) and On Stranger Tides ($378.5 million). Anyone who is still under the delusion that video games are a lesser medium to movies need only look at these figures (and their subsequent profits) to see that it simply isn't the case. Which awesome GTA facts are your favourite? Got any corkers that didn't appear in this list? Shout it out in the comments!
10. GTA V cost more to make than Watchmen and Prometheus:
Although GTA rakes in hundreds of millions within days of launching, it’s not too shocking that the game costs just as much to make. GTA V reportedly cost in the range of $137 million, which is slightly more than blockbuster movies Watchmen and Prometheus. Both films budgeted around $130 million to make. GTA V will most likely make that money back on launch day, though.
11. The All Total length of GTA Talk Radio Stations is over 9 hours:
The hilarious radio stations in the GTA series play everything from resident DJ Lazlow to comedic political shows that butcher American culture. It’s beautifully written – all 9 hours of it! Throughout the games there is 9 hours and 27 minutes of talk radio stations. Will Lazlow return in GTA V? We can only hope!
By the end of 2014, GTA V had sold 45 million units, bringing the series' total to an insane 195 million copies. To give it some perspective, that's more units sold than Call of Duty, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, Final Fantasy and FIFA. In fact, it's a record topped by only three other video game franchises: Mario, Pokemon and the Wii brand of physical simulation games. As Rockstar have proven consistently, while they may not release as many games as most of these aforementioned series, every time they go up to bat, they're a sales juggernaut, because they've so closely nurtured the integrity and quality of each game. If anything, this is proof enough that the delays are ultimately worth it.

13. The Franchise has lawsuits totaling over $1 billion:
GTA just can’t seem to avoid controversy. The franchise is basically the delinquent child of video games who can’t stay out of jail. Trouble and GTA go together like peanut butter and jelly and usually they use it to encourage their franchise. Rockstar’s legal troubles are well-documented, especially the one filed by disgraced Florida attorney Jack Thompson, who once referred to GTA as a “cop-killing simulator.” He filed a lawsuit against Rockstar for $246 million. Rockstar has a laundry list of lawsuits filed against them, with little to none that they actually have to pay out, but in all they total $1 billion. We'll see what happens with GTA V.
